Philip L. Helmer
National Conference Coordinator
1935 – 2008

It is with sorrow that we report that Auxiliarist Mr. Philip L. Helmer crossed over the bar suddenly on Friday, January 4, 2008. Those that knew and worked with Mr. Helmer were able to witness his dedication to the Auxiliary, his family and his church.

Philip L. Helmer
1935 – 2008

Mr. Helmer joined the Auxiliary 1983 and would have served 25 years this coming April. He was a Past Rear Commodore in District 13, Washington State, and held many positions that dealt with membership acquisition and retention. He was a coxswain for over 16 years.

Mr. Helmer was responsible for planning, coordination and execution of the National Conferences (NACON) and the National Training Conference (NTRAIN) for many years.

Mr. Helmer earned recognition for his service, but those that knew him also knew that Phil kept to the background. His pleasure was seeing "things going right." He was firm in his directions but his manner was always with tact and consideration of the next fellow or gal. "He was a giant of a man with a very gentle heart."

He was awarded the Auxiliary Meritorious Service Award and earned the Sustained Service Award six times. His other awards are too numerous to mention.

Sailor, you may now rest your oars.
