There are many different types of marine flares available on the market, however when you’re faced with an emergency you don’t have time to sit down and read the directions. Providing sufficient information on the proper use of the numerous marine flares available has always been an area of concern.

Recently, Flotilla 29 - Dana Point, California working with the Coast Guard, the Ocean Institute of Dana Point and many other fire and municipal law enforcement agencies provided an opportunity for the boating public to observe the performance of the many of the various types of marine hand-held and aerial flares.

The breakwater in Dana Point Harbor, directly behind the Ocean Institute, was chosen for safety. It is an open area free of potential fire hazards while providing easy access for public participation.

Concurrently, off shore on a USCG Auxiliary vessel facility, "Fear Naut," a parachute rocket, smoke signal and a hand-held flare were activated thereby providing the public with a visual presentation from a safe distance.

Immediately following the demonstration, as previously advertised, the public was permitted and encouraged to join the firing line and practice using their current or expired flares.

Fifteen Auxiliarists of Flotilla 29 participated in the "Flare Shoot" demonstrations. The area was cordoned off for reasons of crowd control and safety.

Two Auxiliarists were specifically designated as a communication and security detail. They were located on the breakwater within the viewing area.

Three Auxiliarists were aboard the Auxiliary vessel facility which was located on the seaward side of the breakwater. They provided a safety zone preventing curious boaters from entering the danger area. They also retrieved any debris as the result of the flare shoot.

"This was a great demonstration." "We are grateful for the opportunity to witness this demonstration." And, "We hope this will become an annual event," were some of the comments expressed by the public participants.
